Synopsis

With “As You Like It”, audiences can enjoy a classic in the romantic comedy genre as William Shakespeare’s surreal tale of young lust in a world of mistaken identities and hidden secrets comes to the Old Vic as part of “The Bridge Project”. The production will feature the directing talents of Sam Mendes, whilst the cast includes Stephen Dillane, Christian Camargo and Juliet Rylance.

Camargo, who portrays Orlando, is an American performer who audiences might recognise from television’s “Dexter”. He has appeared in numerous productions on the stage on Broadway and New York where his credits include “All My Sons” with Dianne West and John Lithgow and “Kit Marlowe” at the Public Theater in NYC. With “The Bridge Project”, audiences will also have the opportunity to witness him perform in “The Tempest”.

Meanwhile, director Sam Mendes is well known as a film director as much as a stage director, with his debut movie “American Beauty” earning him an Academy Award for Best Director. However, his stage work has made him an acclaimed name throughout London and New York, with credits that include the Donmar Warehouse’s “The Blue Room”, which starred Nicole Kidman, and the National Theatre’s “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” with Jane Horrocks.

“As You Like It” is Shakespeare’s classic play about young lovers who fear for their lives if the court hears of their blossoming romance. They therefore decide to don disguises and flee to the Forest of Arden where they can truly let their feelings flourish. However, whilst they are free from the court, the Forest has its own tricks up its sleeve and under the canopy of the trees they experience some strange situations. Amongst them is a severe case of mistaken identity and another is a shocking discovery from Rosalind’s past.

As well as the mentioned cast, “As You Like It” also features the talents of Ross Waiton, Michael Thomas, Thomas Sadoski, Anthony O’Donnell, Aaron Krohn, Richard Hansell, Alvin Epstein, Ron Cephas Jones, Edward Bennett, Michelle Beck, Jenni Barber, Jonathan Fried and Ashlie Atkinson.

“As You Like It” appears at the Old Vic Theatre as part of “The Bridge Project” from Saturday 12th June 2010 until Saturday 21st August 2010.
