Back in 1979 audiences on the other side of the Atlantic flocked to the Uris Theatre to witness a new musical that would go on to wow those in the West End as well, not to mention those that saw the movie version from director Tim Burton. The production was “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and it was an adaptation of the Christopher Bond play of the same name. Fast forward more than thirty years and the story is still gripping audiences in London as the musical returns to the West End with Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton in the lead roles.
The musical appeared at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2011 and unsurprisingly received a positive reception and a strong turnout, making this West End transfer inevitable. It arrives at the Adelphi Theatre following the acclaimed production of “One Man, Two Guvnors” and will once again introduce audiences to Benjamin Barker, otherwise known as Sweeney Todd, who is released from false imprisonment to learn some shocking news that only fuels his thirst for revenge further. Alongside the pie shop owner Mrs Lovett he concocts a horrifying and memorable plan that exacts justice on the world that wronged him and his family.
Michael Ball is a well known actor and singer whose career has included numerous musical theatre productions and hit singles. He is also a Laurence Olivier Award winner thanks to his acclaimed performance in the West End show “Hairspray” at the Shaftesbury Theatre and “Sweeney Todd” will mark his return to the West End following his departure from that show in 2009. His other credits include “The Woman in White” at the Palace Theatre in 2005 and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” at the London Palladium in 2002. He was also a member of the original cast of “Les Misérables” when that opened in 1985.
Imelda Staunton, meanwhile, has appeared in films and theatre shows, with credits that include the “Harry Potter” series and “Entertaining Mr Sloane” at the Trafalgar Studios in 2009.
