Synopsis

“Life On Mars” star John Simm appears in this production of Andrew Bovell’s “Speaking In Tongues”, appearing at the Duke of York’s Theatre this September. He takes on the role of Detective Leon Zat in the acclaimed story of parallel lives converging around the disappearance of a pysychiatrist. The lives of the individuals in the story are only brought together by the determination of the detective to get to the bottom of the mystery before it’s too late, with a mysterious stiletto entering proceedings before the play moves along to its unexpected ending.

Outside of “Life On Mars”, Simm has enjoyed an extensive career for the stage and on television, landing a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award for his role in “Elling” at the Bush Theatre and Trafalgar Studios in 2007, which was the culmination of stage work he has carried out since the age of 11, taking in “Goldhawk Road” at the Bush Theatre in 1996 along the way. He has also been seen in movies, taking on roles in the likes of “Wonderland” (1999), “Human Traffic” (1999) and “24 Hour Party People” (2002), in which played the role of New Order’s Bernard Sumner (and as a result appeared onstage with the band to sing the Joy Division song “Digital”). His other television work outside of “Life On Mars” consists of “Clocking Off”, “Doctor Who”, “The Devil’s Whore” and “State Of Play”.

He will be appearing in “Speaking In Tongues” alongside Ian Hart and Kerry Fox, who are both well known actors themselves, appearing in a variety of movies between them. Hart has been seen in “Land And Freedom” (1995), “Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone” (2001) and “Finding Neverland” (2004), whilst taking on the role of John Lennon in both “The Hours And Times” (1991) and “Backbeat” (1994). Meanwhile, Fox has credits that include “Shallow Grave” (1994), “Welcome To Sarajevo” (1997), “The Hanging Garden” (1997) and “Bright Star” (2009).

“Speaking In Tongues” has been seen around the world since it was penned for the stage down under by Australian playwright Andrew Bovell. It was first seen in the West End when it was staged at the Hampstead Theatre in 2000 and has been seen by global audiences in the movie adaptation “Lantana”, in which the actor Anthony LaPaglia took on the role of Detective Leon Zat.

“Speaking In Tongues” makes its appearance at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Monday 28th September 2009 (previews from Friday 18th September 2009) until Saturday 12th December 2009.
