Synopsis

In the current financial climate, “The Power Of Yes” offers us a relevant and thoroughly researched account on what has happened to the world’s economy since that fateful day on Monday 15th September 2008 when everything seemed to collapse.

Penned by the acclaimed playwright, a regular to the National Theatre, David Hare, “The Power Of Yes” appears at the Lyttelton National Theatre from October. It offers us a glimpse of why, when capitalism was brought to its knees, a distinct form socialism emerged to help the rich, in which bank after bank was bailed out by the government.

Hare’s acclaim is well deserved, having penned many of the great plays to appear on the stage of the National, including the trilogy of “Racing Demon”, “Murmuring Judges” and “The Absence Of War” as well as “The Permanent Way”, “Gethsemane”, “Stuff Happens” and “The Secret Rapture”. However, he is also a trusted screenwriter and director, having penned the scripts to movies such as “The Hours”, “Strapless” (which he also directed) and the highly regarded “The Reader”, landing an Oscar for Kate Winslett for her portrayal of Hanna Schmitz. His other directing jobs have included “Licking Hitler”, “Wetherby” and “The Designated Murder”, as well as the play “The Year Of Magical Thinking”.

As a successful playwright, screenwriter and director, Hare is used to showing fine attention to detail and he has ensured that this remains true with this production, meeting with the top brass of the economic sector and thoroughly researching the ins and outs of the situation. The result is a show that will open the eyes of many as the ‘whys’ of the situation come to light – with Hare concluding that the balancing act between greed and fear was removed, paving the way to a system where greed ruled all and leading to an inevitable collapse of the system. It means that we have endured a year of financial uncertainty, in which television screens are inundated with stories concerning sub-prime mortgages, shares, stocks, burst bubbles and statistics.

The show will be directed by Angus Jackson, the Associate Director of the Chichester Festival Theatre, who has directed many productions for the National, including “Fix Up” and “Elmina’s Kitchen”.

“The Power Of Yes” appears at the Lyttelton National Theatre from 6th October 2009 (previews from 29th September 2009) and will then continues at the venue in repertoire.
