William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream is currently appearing at the Globe Theatre under the direction of Jonathon Munby. The production stars Pippa Nixon and Christopher Brandon with Paul Hunter and Siobhan Redmond. Time Out calls is ‘an irrepressible crowd pleaser’ and adds that there was a ‘rapturous applause’ at their showing. The Daily Mail agrees: ‘Well-earned bellows of audience delight’, whilst The Times applauds director Jonathon Munby: ‘Jonathan Munby’s effervescent direction... Enthusiastically applauded by a capacity audience... Siobhan Redmond is wonderfully funny’. The Sunday Times tells us the play ‘Explodes like joyous fireworks... Don't miss.’ The current production runs from 21st May 2008 (previews from 10th May 2008) to 4th October 2008.
Shakespeare’s classic details a forest that comes alive with magical creatures and characters as various occupants of the city of Athens find themselves in the woods. One midsummer’s night, two lovers Hermia (Nixon) and Lysander (Brandon) escape from Athens to be rid of Demetrius (Oliver Boot), the man Hermia’s father wants for his daughter. Unfortunately for them, Demetrius follows them to the woods, hotly pursued himself by Helena (Laura Rogers) who loves him even though he loves Hermia. Meanwhile, on the same night a group of actors led by Bottom (Hunter) leave Athens to be find a quiet spot somewhere to rehearse their play, which is going to be performed at Duke Theseus’s (Tom Mannion) wedding feast. In the woods, all parties find themselves in a world of wonder, surrounded by magic and mysterious characters.
The actors have been praised accordingly, with hilarious performers from Paul Hunter as Bottom and a wonderful contrast between the characters of Hermia and Helena. The music in this production has been praised along with the rest of the piece, with a score described as ‘ethereal’ by Time Out, ‘where celtic folk collides with chimes, gongs and foot-tapping big band swing.’ The design is under similar approval, with a mythical wood recreated with fairies in bright pink flowers encompassing tattered tutus, giving a very chic-look to preceedings.
Shakespeare’s classic is being brought to the Globe from director Jonathon Munby with design by Mike Britton and music by Olly Fox. Additional cast members include Michael Jibson as Puck, Peter Bankhole, Jonathon Bond, Adam Burton, Richard Clews, Robert Goodale, Michael Matus, Sam Parks, Bethan Walker and Sian Williams.
