A new production of “Mother Courage And Her Children” makes its way to London’s National Theatre where it will be housed in the auditorium of the Olivier Theatre. Bertolt Brecht’s famous work will be appearing at the venue from September and will feature acclaimed talent working together to provide audiences with a compelling and deeply moving piece of drama.
This production also stars Fiona Shaw as Mother Courage, an actress who is well known for her work in the Harry Potter series of films and is a celebrated figure for her work on the stage. This has included theatrical productions of “As You Like It” (1984), “The Taming Of The Shrew” (1987), “Hedda Gabler” (1991) and “Medea” (2000), with her work providing her with an honorary CBE in 2001. She will be seen in 2009’s “Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince”, reprising her role as Petunia Dursley, with her other film credits including “Three Men And A Little Lady”, “Jayne Eyre” and “The Triumph Of Love”.
Her role as Mother Courage sees her selling food and clothing within the confines of a raging and horrific war. She provides these essential items to the soldiers in the battles, switching to different sides when it best suits her, in a desperate attempt to keep the business afloat during such difficult times. Her aim is to keep her children alive and to hold on to some sense of hope amongst it all. The story comes to life through the use of music and humour as she sells her items from her wagon on the battlefield of war and we realise the agonising struggle that people must face, as well as the courage that some people hold on to, ensuring that they will come out of the other side.
A highly regarded piece of theatre, “Mother Courage And Her Children” is often considered to be one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century, having first appeared in 1939 from the pen of Bertolt Brecht, an established dramatist who also created the likes of “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” and “Schweik in the Second World War”. Since it was created, it has been seen around the world from its first appearance in Zurich to locations such as London and New York.
“Mother Courage And Her Children” makes its appearance at the Olivier National Theatre from Wednesday 16th September 2009 (previews from Wednesday 9th September 2009) to Sunday 11th October 2009.
