Regarded as being one of the most successful musicals of all time, 'Mamma Mia!' has been one of the main features of London theatre since it's opening in April of 1999. Using the back-catalogue of one of the world's most popular musical groups, ABBA, as it's soundtrack, the musical was so popular on the West End that it has gone on to open in countries all over the world - including Canada, the United States, Australia, Russia, Germany, Norway, South Korea and Japan. Written by Catherine Johnston and produced by Judy Craymer (with the help of ABBA band members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus), 'Mamma Mia!' has been nominated for a swag of awards that includes five Tonys (2002) and five Laurence Olivier Awards (2000). Presently showing at the Prince of Wales Theatre (it moved from the Prince Edward Theatre in 2004) in London, it is expected the show will experience a resurgence in audience numbers with the release of the movie 'Mamma Mia!' this year.
'Mamma Mia!' tells the story of Donna Sheridan and her daughter Sophie, who are planning Sophie's impending wedding, set to take place on a picturesque Greek island where Donna is now living. Donna has brought Sophie up as a single mother, and has never revealed to Sophie who her father might have been. Determined to have her wedding witnessed by the man responsible for her conception, Sophie discovers her mother's old diary and in it the descriptions of three dates with three different men at about the time that Sophie would have been conceived. Sophie secretly plots to have all three men turn up to her wedding, and invites them without informing her mother. On the day before her wedding the three men arrive, revealed to be Bill Austin, an Australian author, Harry Bright, a British banker, and Sam Carmichael, an architect from the United States. Before her mother has the chance to see them Sophie convinces her three potential fathers to keep her invitation to her wedding secret so that she can avoid her mother's anger. Donna bumps into the men just as Sophie is leaving them and is shocked to find her three former flames gathered together in her taverna.
Donna flees to her bedroom, where her two best friends, Tanya and Rosie (having just arrived themselves), try to comfort her. Donna confesses that she honestly has no idea who Sophie's father is, and that she is a little embarrassed to be faced with three men she was once wildly attracted to. At the same time, Sophie is trying to explain to her fiancé Sky that one of the three men that have just arrived could be her father - but she is desperate to hide the fact that it was her manipulations that brought them all to the island on the day before her wedding. Before Sky has the chance to discuss the problem with Sophie in detail he is kidnapped by his friends for his bachelor party, leaving Sophie alone to lament her inability to determine her father from the trio of candidates. That night at Sophie's bachelorette party Donna, Tanya and Rosie decide to perform 'Super Trouper', something none of the women have done since their band 'Donna and the Dynamos' were together many years previous. At just that moment, the three father candidates Harry, Sam and Bill walk in on the party by accident, only to be persuaded to stay. Sophie chats with Bill and the two realize through a set of coincidences that they are probably father and daughter.
Sophie asks Bill to accompany her down the aisle, only to be told later on in the evening by the other two candidates that they both think they are her father as well. Confused and upset, Sophie has a sleepless night and on the morning of her wedding day she is confronted by Sky, who has realized Sophie's plan and is hurt that she did not confide in him. Sophie asks her mother to walk her down the aisle as she still cannot figure out which of the three men is her true father, and her mother agrees, only for Sophie to stop the wedding half way down the aisle because she isn't ready to be married. She and Sky decide to go on a round-the-world holiday together, whilst Sam, one of Sophie's potential fathers, decides to seize the opportunity and propose to Donna. The two marry, and Sophie finally has a man to call her father.
